William Shakespeare once said “The eyes are the window to your soul.” I also believe they are the window to your authentic self. When I see a portrait or a headshot, I’m immediately drawn to the eyes. If the eyes have a blank stare or a “deer in headlights” look, I know the person is being inauthentic. And that’s not their fault! It’s the photographer’s job to help draw out that authentic smile. It can be tough to do and it does require cooperation and energy from the subject as well.

Take a look at the photos below. The one on the left is a nice photo. She has a very pleasing smile and upon first glance, you may not notice anything off about it. Now look at the photo on the right. A similar smile but now look at the eyes. Her eyes are smiling! She looks genuinely happy. She looks authentic. She looks like someone I’d like to do business with.

Next time you smile for the camera, think about smiling with your eyes and see what a difference it makes. Let your authentic self shine.

In our most recent blog post, we offered a little guidance for women when choosing the perfect headshot attire. But worry not men, we haven’t forgotten you! Where women have tricky necklines and jewelry to stress about, men have the age-old dilemma of choosing the perfect tie-shirt-jacket combo. Here are a few tips and tricks for guys to help them look their best on-camera.

DO: Wear a dress shirt that fits. Men of all sizes tend to wear clothes that are too big for them (not exactly a bad problem to have!), which especially shows in front of the camera. Button-up shirts should lay nice and smooth across the shoulders, with minimal blousing or bunching around the collar.

DO: Wear a suit jacket or sport coat. Even if you’re foregoing a tie, we can’t stress enough how much a well-fitting coat pulls an ensemble together. A button-up shirt alone can look a little wrinkled or messy, so do yourself a favor and bring that coat along!

DON’T: Wear a coat with a pattern (i.e. houndstooth). We highly recommend wearing coats (or shirts if you insist on leaving the coat at home) with a solid color. We can work with a subtle pinstripe or pattern if you’d like, but patterns like houndstooth are too small and intricate for the camera to pick up, so the result can look a bit muddled.

DO: Wear a patterned or colorful tie if you want to bring in a splash of color. Ties are small enough that they can introduce a good amount of color or pattern without overwhelming the photo. Especially with a neutral backdrop, a bit of color can be just what is needed to make your headshot stand out!

DO: Use a beefier looking knot, such as a windsor when tying your tie. They tend to photograph much better than any alternative, and it is key that the knot look good as it will certainly be visible in your headshot.

DO: Wear glasses with an anti-glare coating, if possible. We can work a bit of magic in your session to make that pesky glare go away, but it’s always helpful to start with an anti-glare coating.

DON’T: Worry about what pants you wear. Since headshots are the name of the game, most photos will be cropped from the waist or above. Obviously we kindly request that you wear pants, but the style does not need to match your ensemble from the waist up.
